Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant has launched a "first-of-its-kind" cosmetic active to activate the oxytocin receptor, mimicking the dermatological effects of being in love. Per the company, this mechanism delivers skin benefits including boosted luminosity, reduced wrinkles and increased elasticity and comfort.
In vitro Barrier Boosting, Tactile Benefits of GlowCyctocin
Tested in vitro and in organ-on-a-chip models, GlowCytocin (INCI: Glycerin (and) Water (Aqua) (and) Hyacinthus Orientalis (Hyacinth) Extract) reportedly increased the proliferation of fibroblasts and sensory neurons, promoting skin rejuvenation and heightening skin receptivity to pleasant tactile sensations. What's more, the ingredient decreased nociceptive nerve sensitivity for a comforting effect, per the company.
In vivo Luminosity, Anti-wrinkle and Pleasure Benefits of GlowCyctocin
In a placebo-controlled clinical study of 60 male and female mixed-ethnicity volunteers (between the ages of 18 and 65), twice daily application of 1% GlowCytocin for 28 days visibly and significantly enhanced the participants’ skin appearance.
More specifically, according to the company:
- Skin luminosity and healthy glow both increased, as evaluated by clinical grading and self-evaluations;
- The number of wrinkles decreased; and
- Skin elasticity was improved for a rejuvenated skin look and feel.
In the same clinical study, receptiveness to pleasant sensations of touch was measured by electroencephalogram (EEG). Subjects' forearms were touched using a feather, and 30 min after a single product application, significant increases in the frontal cortex activity were observed. According to Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant, this area is associated with positive mood states and higher happiness levels.
This effect was further confirmed with a significant increase in self-reported skin comfort and pleasantness. In addition, GlowCytocin simultaneously significantly decreased capsaicin-induced skin discomfort, per the company.
Tapping into the Dutch Love Bulb
Adding to the ingredient's novelty is its origin story: it is sourced from Dutch hyacinth bulbs grown in deliberate flower strips to promote biodiversity. And per the company, the white hyacinth plant, "symbolizes pure love, aligning its origin with its purpose."
GlowCytocin is also China compliant, COSMOS approved, vegan and has a natural origin index of 99.6%.
A Step Forward in Neurocosmetics
"GlowCytocin is a significant step forward in neurocosmetics and skin care, offering both immediate and long-term benefits for skin appearance and emotional well-being,” sais Isabelle Lacasse, head of global marketing, product line management and formulation at Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant. “This innovation aligns with the growing consumer demand for multifunctional skin care products that deliver both visible results and positive emotions.”
