Consumers select sunscreen products based on the labeled sunburn protection factor (SPF), assuming larger numbers are better. In reality, higher SPF ratings do not necessarily offer significantly higher levels of UV protection. They can even give users a false sense of security, leading them to spend too much time in the sun, which can result in irreversible skin damage.
