Beiersdorf (BDF) reports that after nearly ten years of research, it has uncovered mechanisms of the skin’s glycation process and in relation, has developed an active ingredient to combat this sugar-induced skin aging and wrinkle formation. The ingredient will be featured alongside coenzyme Q10 in an upcoming product launch: Nivea Q10 Dual Action Serum.

The novel active, N-Acetyl-L-hydroxyproline (NAHP; INCI: Acetyl Hydroxyproline), trademarked by the company as Glycostop, is said to prevent the glycation reaction, in return preventing the formation of AGEs by up to 68%. Accordingly, sugar molecules are neutralized before they can bind to proteins and weaken collagen fibers, for example.

Julia Weise, Ph.D., laboratory manager in the biological testing department at BDF, explained, "Many substances intercept the sugar before it can react; they sacrifice themselves and become saccharified. This effect has to be avoided. ... NAHP prevents the glycation reaction from taking place in the first place."

As of April 2024, the Nivea Q10 Dual Action Serum will be available in stores. As noted, it combines BDF's exclusive Glycostop ingredient with the well-established antiwrinkle ingredient Q10. Per the company, the two highly potent ingredients achieve a double effect: they prevent skin aging by blocking the glycation of connective tissue proteins such as collagen, and by raising the Q10 content in the skin, skin is better protected against free radicals.

The new serum reportedly works from day one and is clinically proven to visibly reduce even the deepest wrinkles within two weeks. In addition, it fulfils sustainability standards, being free from silicones, mineral oils and non-biodegradable polymers. The packaging, a high-quality glass pipette, is made from recycled glass that is also recyclable.
