Advanced Methods Measure Skin Penetrants at the Parts-Per-Billion Level
Healthy and intact skin was formerly considered an impermeable barrier designed to shield the living organism from all types of environmental injury, and certainly offering protection from all things chemical. Now skin is recognized as a semi-permeable membrane. Microorganisms cannot penetrate it, but it is pervious to chemicals, selectively allowing molecular passage in and out of the skin.

Over the Top: Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors for Restorative Epigenetic Skin Care
The skin care industry has begun to explore epigenetics to ameliorate skin conditions. Within this field, histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) are of interest thanks to their potent anti-inflammatory and other anti-aging effects. This article reviews their activity and utility.

A High Throughput Method to Predict Skin Penetration and Screen Topical Formulations
This work studies the applicability of a 96-well-based skin-mimetic artificial membrane permeability model to differentiate between topical pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations. Results are compared with data obtained from in vitro Franz cell permeability measurements and reveal the applicability of this method to assess cosmetic formulation permeation and speed the discovery process.

Water Content, Nanoparticles and Skin Penetration in Brazil: Lindo Maravilhoso!
Water content, surfactants, thickeners, actives, nanoparticles and skin penetration were among the hot topics presented at the biennial XXI COLAMIQC congress of the Latin American and Iberian cosmetic chemists. Held May 14-16, 2013, in São Paulo, technical sessions were paired alongside the FCE Cosmetique exhibition and trade show for both the cosmetics and pharmaceuticals industries.

Caprylyl Glycol/Phenethyl Alcohol Blend for Alternative Preservation of Cosmetics
In recent years, the safety of traditional preservatives has been called into question. Therefore, there is a need for alternatives that are effective, safe and sustainable—and that are non-controversial. In response, the present work investigates a mixture of caprylyl glycol and phenethyl alcohol, which is shown to provide antimicrobial activity in various skin and hair care formulations.

Elicitation of Rice Tissue Culture to Maximize Skin Epigenetic Modulation
Meristem cells of Himalayan red rice were cultured and elicited to produce secondary metabolites. Through an in vitro assay, rejuvenation was shown at the epigenetic level of treated cells. An increased expression of dermatopontin in keratinocytes, besides being a novel finding, implies that ReGeniStem™ Red Rice may be able to firm the skin and improve the skin barrier function.

Oleic Acid-induced Skin Penetration Effects of a Lamellar Delivery System
The structure and thermodynamic state of the skin’s lipid barrier are correlated with the skin’s penetration profile in this in vitro study using a delivery system composed of phospholipids, oleic acid, oil and water. Elevated percentages of oleic acid in the system affect the lipid barrier’s structure and thermodynamic properties...
