Consumers are getting it: sunscreen use every day is important to protect the skin against damaging UV. As such, the industry has developed o/w emulsions and other types of sunscreens to provide a refreshing feeling so they are pleasant for regular, everyday use.
However, consumers have responded with their own message: they want more sun protection. In fact, as reported in Global Cosmetic Industry, sales of prestige skin care and makeup products with SPF protection reached $1.4 billion in May 2016—an expansion of 7% from 2014. As the adage goes, "You can never have too much of a good thing."
According to Kao inventors, to enhance UV protection, UV absorbers and metal oxide powders such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are used in o/w emulsion sunscreens. However, such metal oxide powders, especially in large amounts, can aggregate and precipitate out, which affects product stability over time. A new European patent addresses these concerns.
O/W emulsion composition
European Patent EP2921162
Publication date: Aug 2, 2017
Assignee: Kao Corp.
According to Kao inventors, a copolymer of acryloyldimethyl taurate and hydroxyethyl acrylate, along with titanium dioxide powder, exhibits desired formulation effects. This composition, blended in an o/w emulsion, was shown to have favorable stability over time, excellent feel during use and good transparency.
Further, water resistance was achieved using zinc oxide, a crosslinked copolymer of acrylamide and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid and/or an acrylic acid/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer, a surfactant having an HLB of 10 or higher, a silicone oil and water.
