Balancing ingredients is obviously the most important aspect of formulating. Without proper proportions, the formulation may be too thin; ingredients can be incompatible and intended results may not meet expectations.

Just as any science, balance and proper research before experimentation is pivotal to success in cosmetic development. Yet with a constant influx of new ingredients, preservatives and more, experimentation may come down to mixing a product together and seeing how it comes together.
