Inolex has announced a preservation ingredient and was issued European Patent EP3075401B1 directed to paraben-free multifunctional compositions for topical cosmetic, toiletry and pharmaceutical formulations that require caprylhydroxamic acid and a vicinal diol, as well as methods of using the compositions to protect against microbiological growth.

Inolex's latest ingredient, Spectrastat CHA (INCI: Caprylhydroxamic Acid) is a 100% natural, non-palm derived chelating agent in powder form joining the line of Spectrastat preservation products.

The coconut derived organic acid and chelating agent offers a sustainably derived source of caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA) that remains effective at neutral pH and prevents the growth of yeast and mold in formulations, per the company.

Per the company, a variety of MCTDs can be used to accomplish effective preservation when combined with CHA, including caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate and caprylyl glyceryl ether. This combination of materials and the resulting effective preservation of cosmetic products is described in Inolex’s newly granted patent and form the Spectrastat tradename.

Michael J. Fevola, Ph.D., vice president R&D at Inolex, commented: “Our patented compositions and methods yield a versatile ingredient platform which gives formulators optionality when developing their optimal preservation system for consumer products."
