Portola Packaging Inc. and Plastic Solutions of Texas Inc. (PST) announced a joint agreement to market technology, closures and bottles that extend the shelf life of oxygen-sensitive products. According to the companies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved and patent-pending technology that retards the growth of bacteria and helps retain the quality of a product for a longer period of time. The system can be implemented with simple adaptations to conservatively extend the sell by date by 5 to 10 days or more. Considering U.S. dairies dispose of over $1 billion per year in expired fresh milk, the savings implications could be significant, said the companies.
