Self discovery leads the wellness space, according to a 2023 trends report from Well + Good.1 From food, fitness, planet and health, to self-care and beauty, consumers will be adding new practices and products to their self-care routines as individualized as their unique needs. In beauty, according to the source, this translates to products that make users feel as good as they look; for example, natural biotech beauty for less eco-impact, destigmatizing hair loss and attacking it on multiple fronts, psychodermatology and neurocosmetics to relieve stress, and DIY beauty solutions to provide a mood boost on demand.1

The Cleveland Clinic also outlined “Ten Health Trends That Should Go Viral in 2023” that fit into the self-care and wellness space. These include trying a skin toner; embracing “exercise snacks;” working with a health/wellness coach; using cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to improve sleep; setting healthy relationship boundaries; embracing inclusive beauty products; cleaning up social media feeds; “eating your adaptogens;” focusing on lifestyle and health rather than rules and scales; and, “when it comes to self-care, embracing sprinkles of joy.”2

In addition, Pinterest predicted the top five wellness trends for 2023. For one, showering will be given a luxe “glow-up,” complete with elevated routines and specialty products. Another is drinking alcohol in a thoughtful (i.e., I-don’t-want-to-feel-bad-in-the-morning), judgement-free way with intent behind each sip — even replacing it with mocktails. The others included: functional, fundamental fitness for improved strength, mobility and pain management; creative emotional expression (think: arts and crafts, and “digital detoxing”); and eating more sea plants.3

These trends in wellness and self-care illustrate the overlap the cosmetics industry has experienced between beauty, health and wellness in recent years. They also underscore a dynamic space in which cosmetic and personal care innovators can ebb and flow with novel ideas. So where might these ideas best fit in the current and future market? We asked industry experts to weigh in; following are their responses.

“The trends in self-care, nutrition and cosmetics products mirror those of the food industry,” Casey Lippmeier, Ph.D., senior vice president of innovation for Conagen, writes. “[This includes] rising importance placed on clean labels, sustainability, naturalness and evidence-based claims.”
