Artificial intelligence (AI) can be defined as the theory and development of computer programs that can do tasks and solve problems that usually require human intelligence. These include visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and word translation.1 There are many different subcategories of AI although they may be defined differently from field-to-field and depending on different uses. Example subclasses of AI are: machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, cognitive computing, computer vision and natural language processing (for additional information, see Page 7).2

Machine learning uses neural networks to comb through data to find insights and patterns. It can choose what to track within the data without specific programming, and increases its intelligence over time by repeatedly reviewing data. Neural networks are programmed like the neural network of the brain—highly complicated and intricate; although they cannot fully replicate the brain.

Deep learning is a type of AI that analyzes large amounts of data repeatedly to change and edit the outcome. This uses larger neural networks with different layers to process a large amount of data. Cognitive computing uses self-learning algorithms, natural language processing and pattern recognition to create human-like interactions when communicating with machines.

Computer vision is a type of AI that enables a machine to see and recognize images as a human would, and to process what the image is. Finally, natural language processing is programming that helps humans communicate with machines using languages such as English or Spanish.

AI has been integrated into many facets of cosmetics and personal care in the past several years thanks to its relatively easy manipulation. This article highlights select examples, including those that are consumer-facing as well as behind-the-scenes in product development.
