Clariant’s Clear Preservative Aid, Velsan Flex

Clariant has launched a COSMOS-compliant preservation booster, Velsan Flex (INCI: Capryloyl/Caproyl Anhydro Methyl Glucamide (and) Water (Aqua)). Ideal for transparent formulations, the technology affords antimicrobial protection while allowing formulators to use up to 50% less traditional preservative ingredients, including benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol or phenoxyethanol.

Clariant demonstrates Velsan Flex’s versatility through natural formulations and clear formats that are particularly difficult to preserve. Velsan Flex overcomes the challenges of clear applications with its high water content as in the case of micellar gel, tonic water formulations and in clear aqueous formulations containing oil and fragrances with a low preservative load, such as a nourishing shower gel.

Natural formats allow for only a few select preservatives offering sufficient antimicrobial power. According to the company, Velsan Flex has proven success in protecting natural formulations, including a nutrient-rich formula in the form of a rose body lotion and a natural sheet mask. These product formulations are particularly challenging because of their high water content and large surface area, which can be an active breeding ground for microorganisms.

“Clariant’s introduction of a 93% renewable-based preservative booster for cosmetics is set to be welcomed by formulators and brands amid the few available preservative options,” comments Ralf Zerrer, head of innovation and strategic marketing, business unit industrial and consumer specialties. “It opens up more effective preservation systems and environmentally friendly claims to a wide range of cosmetic formulations where the number of traditional preservatives can be reduced, and also natural alternatives can reach required performance levels.”

Velsan Flex carries Clariant’s EcoTain label in recognition of its renewable content and further sustainability advantages offered to personal care formulators through its combination of water and oil solubility and preservative boosting properties.
