Environmental stress leads to cellular oxidation and signs of aging. Certain botanicals, such as French Rose petal extract, can protect skin cells from oxidative damage. This extract and its benefits are described in this article.
Overexposure to sulight has been linked to cutaneous aging through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can activate matrix metal-loproteinases, enzymes involved in the breakdown of the dermal proteins, such as collagen and elastin. The degradation of these proteins is a primary contributor to wrinkle formation and loss of skin elasticity.
The skin has a complex defense mechanism to guard against UV-induced oxidative stress, but excessive amounts of ROS can overwhelm the body's natural defenses and lead to premature skin aging, evidenced by wrinkle formation and age spots. Further damage results in immunosuppression, and ultimately, skin cancer.
