Amerchol has created conditioning polymers that manage hair types requiring volume control and condition unruly, difficult-to-manage hair. SoftCAT SX Conditioning Polymers (INCI: Polyquaternium-67) are the latest addition to the SoftCAT polymers range. The SX polymers include two high-viscosity and two medium-viscosity quaternized hydroxyethylcellulose polymers that incorporate medium levels of hydrophobic modification. According to the company, this allows the polymers to deliver conditioning and deposition performance that is superior to conventional conditioning polymers such as cationic guar.
The belong to a family of quaternized hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) derivatives with cationic substitution of trimethyl ammonium and dimethyl dodecyl ammonium. They carry a higher cationic charge that the company's other polymers.
The company conducted testing whereby two model shampoo systems formulated with different surfactant bases and types of silicones were formulated. The company concluded that silicone deposition was four or more times greater with the new polymers than with cationic guar. In addition, panelists reported the polymers provided superior dry properties and volume control for frizzy hair. Researchers found that the polymers gave not only significant silicone deposition, but also significant fragrance deposition.
