Analyzing Deposition from Rinse-off Hair Products
The most common approach to determine ingredient deposition on hair is to analyze the treated tresses, but this poses several challenges. Instead, the authors describe a novel approach based on determining the amount of ingredient collected in the rinse water, and back-calculating the amount deposited on hair. Development and validation efforts discussed here use polydimethylsiloxane as a model compound.

Novel Shampoo Effects from Solvay
During in-cosmetics 2014, Solvay launched a conditioning solution created to meet market demands for silicone-free, sulfate-free, oil-based and oil-free shampoos. The system targets not the hair type, but the type of effect desired from shampoos.
Sun Care
‘Very’ Water-resistant Sunscreens
Water-resistance is a key parameter for today’s sunscreens, and there are a number of formulation strategies that can be used alone or in combination to achieve this effect, including: anhydrous formulation, w/o emulsions, film-forming polymers, dissolution of water-insoluble substances with alcohol, low levels of emulsifiers, and entrapping filters in liposomes. These are detailed here.

Hypersensitive Skin: Classification and Potential Risk from Cosmetic Formulations
Considering the potential for reactions between cosmetics and hypersensitive skin, the present article will focus on this skin type; first by outlining mechanisms of type I and IV hypersensitization, then by focusing on type I immunogenic vs. non-immunogenic urticaria. Potential urticariogens in cosmetics are considered, and suggestions for future direction are given.

Dielectric Constant to Develop Clear Sunscreens for Wet Skin
Sunscreen sprays have gained momentum due to their ease of application. However, while they appear clear on dry skin, they often turn cloudy and white when applied to wet skin. Here, the authors present a formulating approach based on the dielectric constant of esters and level of alcohol in formulations to produce anhydrous sprays that appear clear on wet skin.

Nanoparticles in Sunscreens: Fact and Fiction
This paper reviews important issues regarding the classification for UV active ingredients and the need for a uniform classification and labeling system covering all nano ingredients. The definition of nanoparticles is not questioned here; however, the highly selective manner in which the definition is applied to different materials is.
Methods/Tools
Visualizing the Impact of Emulsifiers on Emulsion Perception
This paper describes an approach to systematically investigate the intrinsic effects of emulsifiers, quantify them and translate them into consumer preferences. These are processed mathematically and displayed in a simplified, two-dimensional map to assist formulation work.

Recent Advances in Slimming Treatments
Slimming treatments address a number of targets in skin physiology, including: improving microcirculation, strengthening and protecting the connective tissue, and decreasing adipocyte contents. Traditional and newer approaches to slimming treatments employ a number of ingredients to achieve such ends.

Tech Edge: Optical Tools to Examine the Structure of Cosmetic Products
To monitor or anticipate what can happen in the creation of a cosmetic product when components are combined and as time passes is no trivial task especially when compounded with the psychophysical needs for the product to fit a specific concept and to spread, feel, pour and appear elegant.

Charged Vesicles for Delivering Actives in Surfactant-based Formulations
The delivery of active ingredients in surfactants has long been a challenge due to the inability of such ingredients to stay affixed to the skin and hair after rinse-off. One solution is a delivery system that enables the encapsulation of actives in charged vesicles.
