Lubrizol recently announced a $10 million investment to significantly expand its fermentation production capabilities at its Center of Skin Care Excellence in Gavà, near Barcelona. This move will increase the facility's fermentation capacity by five times, the company reports, reinforcing Lubrizol's commitment to sustainable biotech innovation and flexible manufacturing.

Responsible Fermentation Plus Bioprocessing

Lubrizol's platform integrates fermentation and bioprocessing technologies. This expertise reportedly has positioned the company as a leader in creating sustainable, high-performance ingredients that meet modern demands.

The biotech platform uses processes that help protect biodiversity and reduce environmental impact while ensuring consistent quality and performance. This includes:

  • using GMO-free, non-pathogenic microorganisms and
  • sourcing strains without harvesting from nature.

The company also relies on renewable carbon sources for its production, to generate minimal waste and create biodegradable, non-toxic ingredients. Indeed, many of these ingredients are approved under COSMOS standards, per Lubrizol.

Increased Capacity and Manufacturing Flexibility

"This investment reflects our continued commitment to advancing sustainable innovation through biotechnology," said Bernardo Medeiros, vice president of Lubrizol Life Sciences.

"By expanding our fermentation capacity, we are not only supporting the growth of high-performance active ingredients, but also reinforcing our role as a strategic partner in delivering science-backed, environmentally responsible solutions."

The increased capacity will support Lubrizol's continued growth and enhance its manufacturing flexibility. This allows the company to better adapt to both global and regional needs while delivering innovative products that meet consumer expectations.
