What is 1,4-dioxane? Responsible business
1,4-Dioxane is a useful synthetic compound having numerous commercial and industrial applications. However, it can also be formed as a trace by-product during the manufacture of surfactants and emulsifiers where ethylene oxide is used to give ethoxylation. 1,4-dioxane can therefore be present as a trace impurity in shampoos, shower gels and household cleaning products containing these surfactants/emulsifiers.
The Health and Safety Concern
Several environmental, health and safety organizations have listed 1,4-dioxane as a probable carcinogen. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, exposure to 1,4-dioxane can cause a cumulative effect in the body, causing a range of health issues from eye and skin irritations to the potential of cancer.
In December 2019, advocacy led by health and environment agencies in New York state led to the passing of Senate Bill 4389-B, decreasing the usage limits of 1,4-dioxane to 1 ppm for all rinse-off personal care and home care products by December 31, 2023.
