CIR Holds 102ND Meeting

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel considered 10 ingredients at its 102nd meeting in Washington DC. The PPG methyl ethers ingredient group was found safe by the panel. However, the panel found that there was insufficient data to support the safety of the ingredients that make up the Piper methysiticum (kava kava)-derived ingredient group.

The panel will amend its tentative final conclusion, issued in December 2006, in regard to thioglycolates in depilatories to include the following statement:
"These ingredients, in depilatories, are safe when formulated to be non-irritating under the conditions of recommended use."

The safety assessments for p-methylaminophenol sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine were reopened but the safety assessments for benzoic acid, 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane, t-butyl hydroquinone and phenoxyethanol were closed. Furthermore, the panel tabled discussion of the zea-mays (corn)-derived group until the addition of the safety assessment of corn acid, potassium salt, corn glycerides and corn silk are received.
