2007 International Technology, Technology Launch Award Finalists Announced

Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine announced the finalists for its 2007 International Technology Award and 2007 International Technology Launch Award, to be presented at the Sept. 18, 2007, HBA awards dinner. The new technology award recognizes a technology for its importance to the industry and perceived long-term impact. The technology launch award recognizes a significant launch or marketing campaign and its impact on the industry, as well as the uniqueness of the campaign. Nominations for both awards were made by a select group of 50 R&D experts at leading cosmetic and personal care companies around the world.

The finalists for the New Technology Award are:

Silab, for its Coheliss natural active ingredient that acts as an internal tensor. According to the company, by stimulating the mechano receptors and alpha-SMA fibers, the ingredient maintains mechanical tension in dermal tissue thereby stimulating skin mechanical resistance facing gravitational forces. The ingredient is recommended for antiaging applications and was featured in the November 2006 issue of Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine in an article by Catherine Lenaers et al. titled, "Wrinkle Reduction by Stimulation of the Skin's Mechanical Resistance."

Atrium Innovations, for its Neutrazen neurocosmetic, a prototype designed to address skin inflammation in a new way. According to the company, research supports that targeting neural factors in skin may serve cosmetic purposes. The new technology claims to help maintain a normal skin sensitivity threshold to prevent and reverse signs of inflammation in the skin. This innovative tripeptide is linked to a lipid for optimal penetration and efficacy. The company recommends the material for soothing care, sensitive and intolerant skin formulas, baby care, after-sun products and daily protective care.

The Color Factory, for its O-Glow "intuitive" blush, a microcirculating cheek color with Goji Berry-C Complex. According to the company, this clear gel reacts with the individual's personal skin chemistry to turn their cheeks the natural color they blush. The invention is said to work with every skin tone. Upon application, the skin's moisture is said to activate the energizing Goji Berry-C Complex to create a microcirculatory effect, producing a rosy flush that is claimed to last all day. The formula also incorporates vitamin C, pomegranate seed oil and marine plankton, reportedly for added skin health benefits.

The finalists for the New Technology Launch Award are:

Cognis, for its APG ad campaign, including 6 motifs (3 personal care and 3 home care). The ad campaign for its alkyl polyglucoside (APG) promotes it as a "green" surfactant used in cleaning products and comprises three themes covering the personal care and home care segments, with one ad in each showcasing the lead visual for the corresponding market.

Noveon, for its Make It campaign uses short, action-oriented headlines that include a tactile or visual adjective such as "Make it...bold," "Make it...POP!", or "Make it...smooth." This initial marketing line then ends with an appropriate technology from the company to create the named effect, closing with the trademarked catch-phrase, Formulate with Confidence. According to the company, this campaign series is designed to strengthen image and presence in the marketplace through a fully integrated promotion, advertising and event plan. The campaign was intended to speak to the formulator, appealing directly to the creative and rational aspects of formulating.

Sederma, for the launch of its Venuceane active. The company reportedly wished to demonstrate the visible and measurable aging of skin to, in the end, educate consumers about the damaging effects of UV and to demonstrate a preventative approach that cosmetic products can offer. The campaign included information on the technology to "age-proof skin" in the form of marketing sheets, marketing presentations, exhibitions, advertising, gifts, Webinars, conferences, publications and press kits.
