The Ohio Valley chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (OVSCC) is hosting a full-day symposium and dinner meeting to honor the life's work of J. Leon Lichtin, PhD, who co-founded a co-op program for dermatology students in the University of Cincinnati's (UC) James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy. "The Personal Care Industry: Past, Present and Future," which will be held on Nov. 19, 2013, at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, will raise money for the Dr. J. Leon and Beverly Lichtin Cosmetic Sciences Endowment Fund at UC. For more on this pharmacy program, one of the oldest in the United States, read its brief history on the Chemists Corner.
The morning's speakers at the symposium will include: Robert Lochhead, PhD, from the University of Southern Mississippi, with an evolution of chemistry and technology; Beth R. Meyers, a writer-editor from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Office of Cosmetics and Colors, with a historical overview of the developments in cosmetic regulation; and Rachel Weingarten, a beauty historian, with the groundbreaking, dubious and dangerous products and trends of eras past.
The afternoon session of the symposium will include: George Deckner, recently retired from P&G, on the state of the art in formulation and technology; David C. Steinberg, of Steinberg & Associates, on the current regulatory environment in both the United States and globally; and Rachel C. Weingarten, again with a second talk on the latest in consumer trends and insights.
After the last talk, the OVSCC will be holding a cocktail hour and Student Poster session, where graduate students from UC and the University of Southern Mississippi will show off the great research they’ve been conducting.
Following the Student Poster session, Lichtin and his family will join the group for dinner and a celebration of his accomplishments. Several people will be providing testimonials about the impact Lichtin has had on the industry and on their lives personally. There will also be a number of organizations that will be presenting checks for the endowment.
The evening will conclude with a multimedia look into the future, provided by Jeanine Recckio, the only “beauty and lifestyle futurologist on the planet.”
