  • Article

Pentapharm introduces a highly purified watermelon extract. Pepha-Protect (INCI: Citrullus lanatus (watermelon) extract) is a skin protective active reportedly containing natural vitamins, carbohydrates and amino acids.  The extract, according to the company, originated in the Kalahari Desert, where its plant developed its own defense system by producing compatible solutes against drought, heat and UV-irridation. It is these compatible solutes, or small water soluble molecules like sugars and amino acids, that the company has formulated to create the extract.

The watermelon extract is reported by the company to prevent DNA fragmentation in fibroblasts and keratinocytes, protect important cell structures from damage by UV induced radicals and decrease erythema after UV irradiation. According to the company, the ingredient helps to protect the skin against daily stress induced by UV-light and free radicals. The product is recommended for formulation into pre-sun products, body lotions, day and night care and sun creams
