Specifically, the formulations include a combination of essential skin lipid species that are often deficient in disrupted skin. In addition, they exclude lipid species found to be in excess in diseased skin. The formulations also provide components designed to establish and maintain an appropriate calcium gradient within the skin so as to induce the viable epidermis to synthesize and secrete the lipids, and particularly ceramides, that comprise the lamellar phases crucial in establishing an intact, effective epidermal barrier.

The present invention employs algorithms with greater sensitivity, specificity and overall diagnostic accuracy to evaluate image data obtained from reflecting light off of skin lesions. It can be used to produce diagnostically relevant quantitative metrics in real time. Combining a dermatoscope, digital camera and automated screening by computer vision, the invention is said to bridge the diagnostic accuracy gap between invasive and noninvasive pathological analyses. In particular, it acquires images of a lesion on a subject's skin at different wavelengths and utilizes a sweeping arm rotating about the lesion in a clock-like direction to produce diagnostically relevant metrics and classifiers from the image data so as to enhance detection of the skin disease.

Additionally, the composition may include cholesterol. In a preferred embodiment, the Malva neglecta is extracted using hexane as a solvent. As such, described here is a UV composition that contains from about 0.2% to 2% of a UV stabilizer that is an alpha-cyanodiphenylacrylate. Further, the UV composition comprises from about 1.5% to 3.5% of butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, and 3% to about 9% of 2-ethylhexyl-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-enoate. A dermatologically acceptable carrier is also provided.

As noted by these inventors, the instability of high salt-containing emulsions remains an issue even when the water phase is thickened with commercially available thickeners. Thus, described herein is an o/w emulsion that includes greater than ~ 0.5% of the salt form of a neutralized acid, preferably salicylic acid; and from ~ 0.001% to 2% w/w of a gum, preferably xanthan. This emulsion is stable, i.e., substantially unaltered in chemical state and physical homogeneity upon exposure to 14 days at a temperature and humidity of about 50°C and 60% RH. The emulsion may also include from ~ 0.01% to 10% of an emulsifier.
