Topical skin barriers and methods of evaluation thereof
US Patent 8258191
Publication date: Sept. 4, 2012
Assignee: Coloplast A/S

Disclosed in this patent are topical skin barriers for protecting and promoting skin healing, and for providing comfort to the users. Said topical barriers comprise a semi-solid hydrocarbon and a water-absorbing compound. They effectively adhere to skin, affording protection from moisture and waste, and provide transparency in use. Methods of in vitro evaluation disclosed are for the composition's protection from moisture and waste, and its adherence to skin.

Melatonin derivatives and their use as antioxidants
US Patent 8258173
Publication date: Sept. 4, 2012
Assignee: University of Sunderland, GB

According to this patent, melatonin is a radical scavenging agent, although the reaction of melatonin and its analogues with ROS have not been fully studied. Similarly, a satisfactory antioxidant derived from melatonin that provides the needed protection from the harmful effects of free radicals currently does not exist. For this reason, there is a need for compounds and compositions of melatonin derivatives that will adequately protect from the harmful effects of free radicals. The present invention addresses this need.

Glyceryl salicylate and glycol salicylate acid compounds for skin protection, treatment
US Patent 8258121
Publication date: Sept. 4, 2012
Assignee: Mary Kay Inc.

Described by this patent is a composition comprising a glyceryl salicylate compound and/or a glycol salicylate compound that can be used to reduce the amount of moisture evaporated from skin, protect the skin from UV light, and treat aged or damaged skin.

Composition for the cosmetic treatment of age-related dermatological symptoms
US Patent 8257751
Publication date: Sept. 4, 2012
Assignee: Beauté Pacifique ApS

Disclosed in this patent is a composition comprising an extract of a deep sea fish; an extract of Rooibos aspalathus linearis; and optionally, an extract of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (bearberry) as active components; and optionally one or more fillers or ancillary agents conventionally used in the formulation of compositions. Upon administration, the composition has beneficial effects in relation to the cosmetic treatment of age-related dermatological symptoms, such as wrinkled and/or aged skin, as well as hair loss.

Use of an active from flax in a composition to protect and reinforce the barrier function of skin
US Patent 8257753
Publication date: Sept. 4, 2012
Assignee: ISP Investments Inc.

The present invention concerns the use, in a cosmetic composition, of an active originating from Linum i.e., flax, to reinforce the barrier function of the skin and to protect the skin and appendages against external aggressions. The active is derived through the hydrolysis of flax proteins and contains principally polypeptides or peptides. The invention also relates to the use, in a cosmetic composition, of a peptidic hydrolysate of flax as the active principle capable of activating HMG-CoA reductase and activating transglutaminase. The active principle can likewise be used to prepare pharmaceutical compositions to prevent or combat the pathologies linked to alterations in the barrier function, such as hypersensitivies, irritations of the skin and reactive skin, or atopic dermatitis.

Method to treat propolis
US Patent 8257747
Publication date: Sept. 4, 2012
Assignee: Ballot-Flurin Apiculteurs

Disclosed in this patent is a method to treat propolis that includes conducting at least one first extraction of raw propolis with a first pure solvent to obtain a first extract having first properties. A second extraction may be performed with a second different pure solvent on the filtration residues obtained after the first extraction, so as to collect and make usable the entirety of the components of propolis using organic solvents only; and finally the method may include a third extraction performed on the filtration residues obtained after this second extraction, using a third pure solvent different from the two others; the first solvent then being water, the second being alcohol, and the third being oil. The method applies to the production of extracts of propolis for use in the manufacture of hygiene, care, cosmetic products, food products and food supplements.

Cosmetic preparation comprising hyaluronic acid
US Patent 8252348
Publication date: Aug. 28, 2012
Assignee: Beiersdorf AG

The present invention relates to cosmetic preparations with an active substance combination of hyaluronic acid and saponins. Specifically, the preparation comprises, based on the total weight of the preparation: a) from 0.001% to 3% w/w of hyaluronic acid; and b) i) from 0.01% to 4%w/w of one or more saponins; or ii) from 0.01% to 8% w/w of a leguminose extract or a soy extract that, in turn, comprises, based on the total weight of the extract, from 0.01% to 99% by weight of one or more saponins. In one aspect of the preparation, component b) may comprise one or more saponins from glycosides of triterpene sapogenins and steroid sapogenins. In another aspect, the preparation may be present as an o/w emulsion. In yet another aspect, the preparation may comprise a lipid phase with a total polarity of less than 30 mN/m. In a still further aspect of the preparation, the weight ratio of hyaluronic acid to the one or more saponins may be from 1:1 to 1:10.

Composition containing a quinoa grain extract for dematological use
European Patent EP2124982
Publication date: Aug. 22, 2012
Assignee: Laboratoires Expanscience

This invention relates to a cosmetic, dermatological or nutraceutical composition comprising a suitable carrier and an extract of quinoa. The peptide and oside extract of quinoa grains are obtained by: a) starting with quinoa grains, extraction of a raw oil and of a cake and recovery of said cake; b) washing said cake with water or with a water/alcohol mixture in order to only retain the protein portion, and then c) solubilizing the proteins; d) concentrating the proteins and then hydrolyzing said proteins into peptides; e) purifying and recovering the peptide and oside extract, and, if necessary, a suitable excipient. These are useful to promote healing, preventing and/or treating acne, regulating pigmentation disorders, or preventing and/or treating hirsutism or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

The disclosed composition, in one embodiment, is characterized in that the peptide and oside extract consist of 25% to 90% w/w of peptides and from 10% to 50% w/w sugars, the percentages being expressed relatively to the total weight of said peptide and oside extract. Cosmetic applications include for treatment of hair on the head or body, nails, alopecia, dandruff or normal, dry, greasy, mixed, dehydrated, aged or sensitive skin.
