The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cracked down on Wisconsin-based Beehive Botanicals Inc. after the company did not comply with requests to remove and change misbranded and unapproved claims from its Web site and labels.
According to a report by the Star Tribune, US Marshals raided the company on March 31, 2010, by request from the FDA, confiscating creams, throat sprays, capsules, gum, and shampoos from the company. According to the FDA, the company claimed in promotional materials and labeling that bee by-products such as propolis can cure or prevent medical conditions.
The FDA stated that these claims were unfounded medical claims, and sent a letter in March 2007 requesting that they be removed from the company's Web site and packaging. Although the company proposed new labeling at the time, which the FDA approved, the same claims reportedly continued on related Web sites.
On March 25, 2010, a complaint was filed by the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin suggesting that the company continued to violate the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The complaint requested that the FDA confiscate the products of Beehive Botanicals Inc.
