Encapsulated Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane for Water Phases

EMD Chemicals has launched an encapsulated butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane for incorporation into the water phases of formulations. Eusolex UV-Pearls B-O (INCI: Water (aqua) (and) Octocrylene (and) Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (and) Silica (and) PVP (and) Phenoxyethanol (and) Chlorphenesin (and) Disodium EDTA) is formed via a micro-encapsulation system that entraps the oil-soluble, organic UV-filters to allow for their dispersion into aqueous phases.
According to the company, encapsulation of the materials reduces the tackiness typically contributed by oily UV-filters, allowing chemists to develop more elegant formulations. To achieve this result, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane is solubilized with octocrylene to prevent butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane from crystallizing, thus avoiding solubility issues.
The mixture has an intrinsic broad-spectrum protection in which the attenuation from UVB is balanced with UVA absorbance. Therefore, it is possible to formulate photo-stable, broad-spectrum suncreens and daily care products using two UV filters. Moreover, it was shown that combining the butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane and octocrylene in the oil phase with the encapsulated butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane in the water phase will enhance the SPF values, when compared with the same amount of UV filters in the oil phase alone.
The encapsulated butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane exhibits a high degree of safety, preventing direct skin contact with UV filters, leading to reduced skin penetration and lowered allergic potential.
