Ayurvedic Plant Derivative for Natural Anti-acne Benefits
Posted: August 25, 2010
Unigen Inc. has developed a natural anti-acne ingredient with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties. Bakutrol (INCI: Not Provided) is an extract of Psolarea corylifolia (babchi) that contains bakuchiol, a compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and to inhibit the COX/LOX inflammatory pathways. According to the company, Psolarea corylifolia (babchi) is a plant commonly used in ayurveda medicine.
The company reports that nearly 85% of the US population is expected to develop, between the ages of 12 and 24, some type of microbial or inflammatory skin condition such as acne. It also notes that global sales for acne treatments in 2009 reached approximately US $600 million, an increase of 22% from 2003. The company adds that current topical antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and retinoids often cause skin irritation, dryness and other unwanted side effects.
The company conducted clinical studies with the extract and found that it reduced both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions without adverse side effects. Additionally, the extract was observed to reduce scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). The material can be formulated with other anti-acne ingredients such as salicylic acid, or used as an active in creams, lotions, gels, masks and other cosmetic products.
