BASF Beauty Care Solutions has designed a red algae extract to revitalize stressed skin: Osmogeline (INCI: Water (aqua) (and) Algae Extract (and) Citric Acid) is said to moisturize and smooth the cutaneous surface in three days.
According to the company, environmental stress creates an imbalance in the overall metabolism of the skin, resulting in a dull, uneven and aged appearance. Therefore, the company designed the ingredient to address these three levels of imbalance by protecting the dermal matrix, stimulating and protecting the barrier, and fighting against redness and uneven skin tone.
The ingredient reduces redness and inflammation by reducing the overproduction of TNF-a. It strengthens the skin barrier by inducing involucrin synthesis. Finally, the dermal matrix is protected by limiting the activation of MMP1 and MMP3, enzymes implicated in the degradation of the dermal matrix.
The extract is offered in gel form to add a soft touch to finished formulations. The company reports that use of the ingredient in skin care formulations can result in a smoother, softer and better hydrated appearance. The ingredient is recommended for revitalizing booster concentrates, moisturizing gels, smoothing gels and daily protective lotions.
