Evonik Solubilizes Lipophilic Ingredients in Water-based Formulations

At in-cosmetics in Hamburg, Evonik will unveil its naturally derived solubilizer for lipophilic ingredients like emollients and natural oils into clear cosmetic formulations. In addition to its solubilizing ability, TEGO Solve 61 (INCI: Polyglyceryl-6 Caprylate(and) Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate (and) Polyglyceryl-4 Cocoate (and) Polyglyceryl-6 Ricinoleate) also has good skin feel as well as mitigating and moisturizing benefits.

The solubilizer is based on polyglyceryl esters and is made from 100% renewable raw materials. It complies with Ecocert standards. The product is easy to handle and cold processable, thus allowing easy preparation of mixtures with oils and water. For example, fatty oils such as avocado, olive, jojoba, sunflower and argan oil as well as caprylic/capric triglyceride can be incorporated into clear formulations. It was found to outperform PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil in the solubilization of natural oils.

In an in vivo short-term moisturization test using a Corneometer, the solubilizer was also found to act as a humectant and provide moisturization in a body lotion.

The solubilizer can be used in cleaning solutions or detergent systems without effecting the foaming properties of the formulation. Crystal-clear cosmetic formulations also are possible. The product is cold processable without the formation of gel phases.

The solubilizer is recommended at 0.5-10.0% in shampoos, body/hand/facial wash and gel, makeup remover, emulsions and wet wipes.
