Hybrid Silicone Powders for Oil Absorption in Cosmetics

Shin-Etsu Silicones of America, a US subsidiary of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd., has added two oil-absorbing spherical powders to its KSP line of hybrid silicone powders. The line combines a silicone rubber core with a with a silicone resin shell to provide feel and visual benefits to cosmetic formulations.

KSP-441 (INCI: Polysilicone-22) and KSP-411 (INCI: Polysilicone-1 Crosspolymer) are hybrid spherical designed to absorb specific oil types to provide anti-shine benefits. KSP-411 was designed to absorb silicone oils and some light esters, while KSP-441 was designed to absorb organic oils and sebum. These silicone powders deliver visual benefits such as a soft focus effect, matte finish, natural look and transparency as well as feel properties such as smoothness, silkiness and moisturization. The hybrid powders provide a natural, soft focus effect due to proper transmittance and off-specular reflectance. These two powders join the company's KSP-100 series (KSP-100, 101 and 105 INCI: Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesqioxane Crosspolymer) and KSP-300 (INCI: Diphenyl Dimethicone/Vinyl Diphenyl Dimethicone/Silsesqioxane Crosspolymer).

According to the company, formulators creating anti-aging products should adopt a masking technology for consumers in combination with actives, as actives alone take more time to achieve results.

The company adds that the formulator must control key factors such as relatively low refractive index (RI), RI difference of the powder and the carrier and the particle size of the dispersed spherical powder to optimize optical blurring.

Effectively formulated, the series is ideal for a wide range of anti-aging products including; skin lotions and creams, anhydrous skin treatment serums, powder foundations and blushes, hot pours, and liquid foundations, etc.
