BASF Beauty Care Solutions has introduced an active extracted from the galanga leaf that stimulates hyaluronan synthase-2 (HAS-2), the only hyaluronan synthase that is able to produce hyaluronic acid with high molecular weight. With the increased production of hyaluronic acid with high molecular weight, Hyalufix GL (INCI: Not Provided) is said to reduce the appearance of fine lines in addition to brightening skin tone.

When used in a skin cream, the glanga leaf extract is said to improve the complexion. The company reports that in a 2% concentration, the active doubles the amount of hyaluronic acid produced in vitro.

The company conducted a clinical study on 25 women to report that 3% of the active decreased the appearance of smile lines more effectively than an antiwrinkle peptide after 4 weeks of application. Increased radiance was reported in 84% of the panelists found and 63% felt that density appeared to be restored to their skin.

As humans age, shadows appear on their face in the form of dark circles under the eyes, hollowed areas in the cheeks, lines around the mouth and under the chin. The active is said to make these shadowed areas brighter and help small lines disappear.
