Titrated Centalla Asiatica for Skin Anti-aging

Serdex, a division of Bayer Santé Familiale, has titrated an extract of Centella asiatica for its anti-aging properties on skin. Talactiv' (INCI: Glycerin (and) Water (aqua) (and) Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract) is said to modulate epidermal homeostasis, to improve fibroblast functionality, and to protect the collagen network. Specifically, Centella asiatica from Madagascar (Talapetraka) was chosen and titrated in a phytochemical composition of triterpens and polyphenols.

To test the product's biological activities, the company compared 0.2% of the compound against a control to determine the ability of each to stimulate IGFBP-3 in normal human epidermal keratinocytes, which regulate the early stages of keratinocyte differentiation. The company found that the compound stimulated the expression of IGFBP-3 12X that of the control.

The company also compared 0.2% of the compound against a control for its stimulation of the mTOR pathway, which improves fibroblast functionality and improves nutrient and energy levels. The company found the compound to stimulate this pathway.

Finally, the company compared .04%, 0.2% and 1% of the compound against dexamethasone and a control to determine the ability of each to inhibit MMP-1 in aging fibroblasts, which protects the collagen network. This test showed the compound inhibited MMP-1 in a dose dependent manner in aging fibroblasts.

The compound is recommended at 1–2% in anti-aging products.
