According to the Manuka Bioscience website, triketone compounds found in the oil are responsible for the oil’s antimicrobial activity. Mānuka that grows in the East Cape region of New Zealand has a unique chemical identity described as the high triketone chemotype where the triketone level in the oil is over 20%.

Per the website, the company is developing mānuka oil derivatives to increase therapeutic efficacy while retaining the skin-safe properties of mānuka oil.
