Located in Des Moines, Iowa, cosmetic ingredient supplier Kemin reported new in vitro studies confirm the blue-light-absorbing capacity of its marigold-derived FloraGLO Lutein Topical (INCI: Xanthophyll) product.
High-energy visible (HEV) light, also known as blue light, comprises natural light and man-made light to which humans are regularly exposed, particularly from electronic screens. Studies of the ingredient at different concentrations found it effectively shielded skin against HEV light.
According to Kemin, the study measured "the cell viability as the percentage proliferation of metabolically active human epidermal keratinocytes and human dermal fibroblasts exposed to blue light for nine hours, and the intracellular reactive oxygen species released in cells, in response to blue light exposure."
"[P]rotecting the skin against harmful blue light rays could be an indispensable way to reduce the inevitable skin damage from visible light and an introduction to a new need in the beauty regimen to protect skin from full solar spectrum damages,” said Satish Nayak, Ph.D., research and development director for the personal care division at Kemin Industries, in a press statement.
