University Releases Discovery on DMAE

In the latest edition of the British Journal of Dermatology, researchers from Université Laval's Faculty of medicine reported their findings that 2-dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) causes a pathological reaction in skin cells.

DMAE is a well-known compound in personal care, as it is formulated into antiaging creams and lotions, cosmetics, and hair care products. According to the researchers, the application of the ingredient causes immediate swelling of fibroblasts. The researchers further reported that the application of DMAE slowed and sometimes stopped cell division. In addition, certain metabolic reaction reportedly slowed and nearly 25% of fibroblasts were said to have died.

The researchers maintained that their research was not to discourage the use of DMAE within personal care products, but to recommend further research in to its safetyl
