The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) of Brazil has alerted consumers to the danger of using Brazilian keratine treatments and/or Escova progressiva treatments. The PBA notes that these hair treatments are mislabeled and lack ingredient labeling. The association also notes that the products may contain chemicals such as formaldehyde.

According to the Brazilian Toiletry, Perfumery and Cosmetic Association, demand for Brazilian beauty products has drastically increased over the last few years, in part due to the popularity of Amazonian extracts.
