Intertech Pira has released the program information for its two-day course titled "Introduction to EU Regulations for Cosmetics." The course will take place on Sept. 27-28, 2007, in Leatherhead, UK, and will feature a variety of topics. Peter Megaw, senior consultant of chemicals at Caleb Management Services Ltd. and Jan Backmann, regulatory affairs expert at Ciba Expert Services, will be the course tutors.

The event will begin with an introduction to current and impending regulations for cosmetics, including discussions on REACH, safety, testing and labeling. A presentation on EU cosmetic safety regulations will follow, with presentations on how to ensure safe products under new test restrictions, risk assessment and management, safety of cosmetics ingredients and customer fears and perceptions. The third topic of day one will be REACH and how it affects cosmetics manufacturers. This topic will include obligations of ingredient manufacturers, identification and naming of substances, and testing requirements of REACH versus testing restrictions of the cosmetics directive, among other issues.

Day two of the event will begin with testing. Attendees will be presented with information on new restrictions on animal testing, including the advantages and disadvantages of animal testing; tests that are required; marketing restrictions; and legal questions, among other topics. A presentation on labeling  will follow with what is required and allowed. Within labeling, safety information, ingredient information and environment information will be discussed. The event will conclude with a comparison of information from non-EU countries, the FDA and the Asian markets.
