The Lubrizol Corporation’s Noveon Consumer Specialties has introduced a polymer that provides sensory properties and electrolyte tolerance. Novemer EC-2 Polymer (INCI: Sodium Acrylates/ Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer (and) Hydrogenated Polydecene (and) Lauryl Glucoside) allows formulators to use one polymer to create a smooth and elegant emulsion.
The liquid polymer reportedly is multifunctional, easy-to-use and pre-neutralized. According to the company, it was designed to thicken, emulsify, co-emulsify, stabilize and suspend a variety of oil phase components in even the most challenging skin care formulations. Its sensory profile allows for spreading, a cascading effect and a delicate and soft after feel.
The polymer offers viscosity building and yield value across a range of use levels, making it ideal for finished formulations ranging from low viscosity lotions to high viscosity creams. The polymer's electrolyte tolerance allows it high efficiency in the presence of difficult-to-thicken electrolytes and actives at pH 5.5-11. In addition, it is said to have excellent shear stability.
Due to its liquid form, the polymer can be used in hot or cold processing and may be added to the manufacturing process at any time for final viscosity adjustments.
