Nanosized benzimidazolone pigment particles
US Patent 8455654
Publication date: June 4, 2013
Assignee: Xerox Corp. and the National Research Council of Canada

Described herein is a nanoscale pigment particle composition that includes an organic benzimidazolone pigment and a sterically bulky stabilizer compound. The benzimidazolone pigment associates non-covalently with the substituted pyridine derivative stabilizer compound, the presence of which limits the extent of particle growth and aggregation to afford nanoscale pigment particles. Said nanoscale particles are useful in, for example, paints, coatings, colorized plastics and resins, photographic components and cosmetics, among others.

Cosmetic preparation for coloring the eyelids and eyebrows
US Patent 8454981
Publication date: June 4, 2013
Assignee: Faber-Castell AG

This patent discloses an aqueous cosmetic preparation for coloring the eyelids and eyebrows containing 0.1-5% w/w polyvinyl pyrrolidone; 4-25% w/w ethanol or propanol alcohol; 2-15% w/w of a dampening agent; 0.1-5% w/w of polyoxyethylene glycerin fatty acid ester and/or polyether-modified polysiloxane; and a colorant. The cosmetic preparation has a viscosity of less than 50 mPas (Brookfield, 25°C).

Tinted phase-inverting emulsion
WIPO Patent Application WO/2013/076691
Publication date: May 30, 2013
Assignee: L'Oreal

The present invention relates to a cosmetic composition to care for and/or make up keratin materials. The composition is an oil-in-water emulsion that undergoes phase inversion when applied to said keratin materials. The formula comprises at least one pigment having a particle size greater than 100 nm, and a combination of at least one hydrophilic surfactant and at least one lipophilic surfactant. This composition aims to provide uniform pigment distribution and good coverage on the skin, similar to the properties of water-in-oil emulsions.

Chip-resistant, high gloss nail polish
WIPO Patent Application WO/2013/076511
Publication date: May 30, 2013
Assignee: Chemence Ltd., H Cooke, CJ Brunton and M Dincheva

This patent relates to nail coating compositions, packages including them, methods of applying them to the nails, and use of an additive compound to improve the properties of the nail coating composition. In particular, the invention addresses improved chip resistance, good adhesion to the nail, a high gloss finish, and a short dry-to-touch time. The coating composition comprises a radiation curable component including an acrylate-terminated oligomer in combination with at least one acrylate monomer; and a thiol component present in an amount of from about 5-90% w/w of the nail coating composition. Said thiol component contains two or more SH groups, and when the thiol component consists of a bis and/or tris functional thiol, it is present as at least 15% of the nail coating composition.

Color metallic pigment, method for production and cosmetic containing same
European Patent Application EP2599838
Publication date: June 5, 2013
Assignee: Toyo Aluminium Kabushiki Kaisha

The color metallic pigment preparation according to the present invention contains: a) a color metallic pigment, b) an amorphous silicon oxide film layer formed on the surface of the metallic pigment, c) a metal oxide layer formed on the surface of the amorphous silicon oxide film layer and containing a metal oxide other than silicon oxide, and d) metal particles that are formed on the surface of the metal oxide layer, wherein the metal particles directly cover a part of the metal oxide layer. This preparation aims to provide good adhesion and a metallic feel.

Dispersion and process for producing colored organic solid particle
European Patent EP2450409
Publication date: June 5, 2013
Assignee: Daicel Chemical Industries, Ltd.

This patent relates to a colored organic solid particle, e.g., a polymer particle, useful for a cosmetic; an image-recording material such as an ink or a colored particle used for an ink jet printer or other means; a paint and varnish such as a powdered paint; and a coloring agent for a print ink. Also described is a process for producing the particle and a composition having a disperse system that is useful for producing the organic solid particle.

Re-applicable mascara composition
US Patent 8454944
Publication date: June 4, 2013
Assignee: ELC Management, LLC

Disclosed herein is a re-applicable mascara composition containing a unique combination of a chemically modified wax and a polymeric film-former including a copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and aminoacrylates. This mascara composition can be readily re-applied to eyelashes hours after the initial application to increase lash volume, without the discomfort and clumping commonly caused by attempts to re-apply mascara to already-coated eyelashes.

Wear-resistant cosmetic compositions
European Patent EP1152730
Publication date: May 29, 2013
Assignee: Avon Products, Inc.

This patent relates generally to cosmetic compositions but more particularly, to compositions that are applied to the lips and offer enhanced ease of application and wear resistance; e.g., non-feathering and non-bleeding. In addition, the present invention provides cosmetic compositions that have features of traditional gloss products, namely high shine, even coverage and light feel. Accordingly, provided is a lip gloss composition that is semi-solid, glossy, long-lasting and wear resistant. The composition comprises a gel base, and optionally, one or more waxes, one or more colorants, and one or more emollients.
