IFRA to Define Natural Fragrance via Task Force

Personal care product manufactures have struggled to define the terms natural and organic. These manufacturers are confronted with many issues, including the definition of a natural or organic fragrance. To address this problem, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has assembled a task force to choose a standard definition for natural and organic fragrance.

The task force has only met once; however, IFRA expects to have a preliminary draft of the definitions in the first half of 2009. The task force will define "bio-fragrance," "natural," "organic" and "green." According to IFRA, some large fragrance suppliers have already come out with "certified-organic" fragrances. The task force, therefore, will determine definitions that satisfy both suppliers and manufacturers.
