Dimethicone for D5 Replacement, Sensory Enhancement

Shin-Etsu Silicones of America Inc., a subsidiary of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. has developed a high purity, low residual dimethicone fluid as an alternative to D5 siloxanes and D5 derivative materials for application in hair care, sunscreens, skin care and color cosmetics.

DM-Fluid-2cs (INCI: Dimethicone) reportedly delivers enhanced sensory benefits to cosmetic formulations due to its low viscosity (2 cs) and near-zero skin irritation rating (0.1). The volatile fluid's high purity and low residual characteristics enable it to serve as a non-reactive delivery agent that easily rubs in and will flash off the skin in time, leaving a comfortably silky skin feel.

The DM-Fluid-2cs diluent system is also employed across the company's specialty silicone product line to provide D5-alternative delivery systems for the company's emulsifiers, elastomer products, film-formers and dispersions of UV filters. The diluent system has a higher flash-point than D5, making it less combustible.

The company also is offering two parallel products to the dimethicone fluid: TMF-1.5 (INCI: Methyl Trimethicone) and DM-Fluids-A6 (INCI: Dimethicone). DM-Fluids-A6 is a non-volatile that can replace D5 in applications where volatility is not a necessity, while TMF-1.5 is a volatile silicone designed for higher end applications. The two chemistries can also be blended with the dimethicone fluid to provide optimal performance and cost efficiencies to achieve sensory benefits in applications such as color cosmetics, skin care, antiperspirants, sunscreens, etc.
