Lip-plumping Active With Antioxidant Benefits

Symrise has introduced an active that enhances the fullness of lips in 28 days. Sym3D (INCI: Hydroxymethoxyphenyl Proopylmethylmethoxybenzofuran) plumps the lips by increasing the number of fat cells and increasing the size of fat cells.

According to the company, the active increases lip volume 6% in less than a month for a long-lasting lip plumping effect. The active does not irritate or sensitize the mouth area an also provides antioxidant benefits to decrease the appearance of age of that area.

To test the active's ability to increase lipid incorporation, the company incubated 3T3-L1 cells with either a control, a hormone mix containing insulin, dexamethasone and isobutylxantine or the active. Accumulated triacylglycerols were then stained via fluorescent dye at day 10 and measured. At day 10, the active accumulated approximately 125 and 130% of the lipids with 10 um and 1 um of the active, whereas, the control and the hormone mix accumulated approx 10 and 100% of lipids.

In addition, the increase of fat cell production was tested by quantifying the differentiation of specific transcription factors by RT-PCR. Undifferentiated 3T3-L1 cells were incubated with a control, the hormone mix mentioned above or the active. RNA were isolated at days two, four and seven, and FABP4, adiponectin, PPARy2, C/EBP-alpha and Pref-1 were quantified via RT-PCR. It was found that the active significantly increased the production of new fat cells. All of the proteins quantified increased with the active except for pref-1, which decreased with both the hormone mix and the active versus the control.

The active is supplied as a white powder. It is oil-soluble and is recommended at 0.25%.
