After Pantone declared "Radiant Orchid" as its Color of the Year for 2014, the orchid flower began popping up in beauty products. That is the case in this Pre-Wash Primer, which is part of the Nexxus Color Assure line. The primer is formulated with exotic white orchid extract, to help seal and protect each hair strand; repelling water to colored hair remarkably vibrant. This column will review the ingredient listing for functionality and claims substantiation.
This is an anhydrous serum based on silicone derivatives cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, dimethicone and phenyl trimethicone. The ingredients in this product are similar to “shine” serums on the market, but this product is marketed as a “shampoo pre-treatment.” Aminopropyl dimethicone and dimethicone crosspolymer are silicone based polymers for conditioning and film-forming and to repel water.
The bioactive or cosmeceutical ingredients are Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, Argania spinosa (argan) kernel oil and Phalaenopsis amabilis (white orchid) flower extract. While I could not find any scientific facts about white orchid extract’s ability to “help seal and protect” hair, the claims are “inspired from findings showing the flower’s mysterious capacity for immortality, beauty, and its versatility to adjust to different environments with vibrant color,” according to another brand’s website.
There is fragrance in this product. There are no preservatives listed, as they are not necessary in an anhydrous formula.
