Now that summer is over, dry, sun and wind damaged hair could probably benefit from deep conditioning. Badger's Seabuckthorn Hair Oil may just do the trick by restoring hair’s natural balance. This column will review the ingredient listing for claims substantiation and functionality.

This is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Organic product; therefore, at least 95% of the ingredients must be certified organic, the formula may not contain certain synthetics, and the formula must not include preservatives.

The carrier oils in this formula are organic jojoba, sunflower and apricot oil. Most likely, any ingredient listed after the apricot kernel oil is present in the formula at 1% or less. No claims are made for the two most predominant oils—jojoba and sunflower—although as emollients they moisturize and add shine. Apricot oil is lightweight and helps to seal and smooth the hair’s cuticle. Pomegranate oil is rich in antioxidants, but the claim that it “promotes regeneration and strengthening of hair” is probably not a clinically substantiated claim.

Seabuckthorn berry, known as “the holy fruit of the Himalayas,” has been cherished by native Tibetans for centuries for its nutritional and medicinal value. The C02 extracts of seabuckthorn and rosehip are rich in vitamins B, C, E, and K, beta-carotene, essential omega fatty acids and antioxidants. While the claim for aiding in “collagen production” is irrelevant to hair condition, there may be a benefit from promoting hair strength and elasticity and restoring healthy hair.

The scent is imparted by the essential oils of lavender, sweet orange and rose geranium. Natural vitamin E is an antioxidant and helps protect the product from rancidity.
