Abstract: From more than 40 technical sources published in the 1990s, the author reviews methodologies from measuring important variables such as hair condition, bioactivity and irritation of skin and eyes.

This article reviews some of the important methodologies and techniques published during the past ten years on the subject of cosmetics and toiletries. More than 50% of the published methodologies dealt with measuring skin condition--its moisture, wrinkles, damage, irritation, sensitization and other factors. A great deal of literature dealt with the use of in vitro testing to establish safety. About 10% of the articles covered in vitro eye irritation tests and about 10% decribed techniques for testing hair.
