Microbe Interactions and Skin at C&T Summit

The skin is the body's interface to the outside world, and it harbors populations of non-pathogenic, commensal microorganisms that have important functions in skin health and disease. Analysis of the healthy skin microbiota has revealed the great topographical and temporal complexity at this barrier surface. However, little is known regarding the factors that shape and maintain commensal skin microbiota, including host factors, environmental factors and topical products.

Elizabeth Grice, PhD, assistant professor of dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, will explore this subject during the Cosmetics & Toiletries Summit, to be held June 26-27, 2014, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. According to Grice, genomic approaches are employed to analyze cutaneous microbiota and responses to perturbation, and elucidating these relationships provides a foundation for targeting the host-microbe equilibrium and restoring skin homeostasis.

This discussion will cover the latest findings in host-microbe interactions of the skin, in relation to skin homeostasis, health, probiotics and other topical products. The presentation of these and other concepts during the C&T Summit is made possible, in part, through the support of sponsors.

About Grice

Elizabeth Grice, PhD, received her undergraduate degree in biology from Luther College, and her doctorate in human genetics from Johns Hopkins University. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute, where her work focused on using molecular and genomic methods to characterize the vast topographic and temporal diversity of the human skin microbiome. Her laboratory now broadly focuses on host-microbe interactions of the skin, and their contribution to skin disease and health.
