Disclosed in this patent are aqueous preservative solutions with a high amino acid content that are particularly effective against fungi and have excellent storage stability. When incorporated in a cosmetic, they impart a high moisturizing effect without causing a sticky feel. In addition, they prevent dyed hair from fading. Such solutions can be achieved by incorporating: pyrrolidone carboxylic acid and/or a salt thereof; a basic amino acid and/or a salt thereof; an acidic amino acid and/or a salt thereof; a neutral amino acid and/or a salt thereof; and lactic acid and/or a salt thereof at a specific ratio and pH.

The present invention describes an antimicrobial composition comprising an effective amount of a mixture comprising at least two of: a) lemon grass oil; b) cinnamaldehyde, cinnamon oil, Cinnamomum cassia, cinnamon extract, cassia leaf oil, 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid or salt thereof, or a mixture thereof; c) sorbic acid or a salt thereof; d) erythorbic acid or a salt thereof; e) benzoic acid or a salt thereof; f) arabinogalactan, galactoarabinan or a mixture thereof; g) a hexahydro-iso-alpha-acid, tetrahydro-iso-alpha-acid or a mixture thereof; h) Achillea fragrantissima (Santolina fragrantissima Forssk., lavender cotton) oil; and i) δ-gluconolactone. The invention also provides a product, preferably other than foodstuff, pharmaceutical or cosmetic, comprising an effective amount of cinnamaldehyde or a mixture of cinnamaldehyde and one or more alkanol-dialkyl hydantoins.

Isothiazolone-containing preservative for microbicidal finishing

Described herein is a preservative that provides microbicidal finishing. In particular, it comprises: a) one or more isothiazolones with b) one or more 1- or 2-(C1 to C24-alkyl)glycerol ethers (glycerol monoalkyl ethers). According to the inventors, this technology aims to preserve cosmetic and pharmaceutical products via broad-spectrum activity and even at a low use concentrations. It also can be stored for long periods.

This invention applies esters and ethers derived from xylitol, obtained by organic synthesis, as alternative emollients, moisturizers, emulsifiers, co-emulsifiers and preservatives for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and veterinary products. The molecules are mainly xylitol esters and ethers associated to the chains of fatty acids and alcohols, applied isolated or in association with other molecules of known preserving and/or moisturizing/emollient actions such as: phenoxyethanol, butylene glycol, glycerin, caprylyl glycol, ethyl hexyl glycerin, phenetyl alcohol, nisin and lactoferrin, among others. Some embodiments present antimicrobial action against, for example, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergilus niger and Candida albicans.

The objective of this invention is to provide a disinfectant with activity against mycobacteria that does not irritate the skin and that does not have degreasing activity; i.e., it does not include a high content of lower alcohols such as ethanol or isopropanol. A method to preserve cosmetic products also is described by adding to them a concentrate, which includes: a) 1-(2-ethylhexyl) glycerol ether, and b) one or more aromatic alcohols, whereby a) and b) have a weight ratio less than or equal to 0.15.

Described in this patent is a cosmetic preservative that comprises Lonerica sp. (honeysuckle) extract, a metal chelating agent and ethanol in amounts effective to inhibit microbial growth including bacteria, molds and yeast. The effectiveness may be enhanced by the addition of a phospholipid, ascorbic acid and ascorbic acid salts. Effectiveness against microbial growth is further improved by addition of a combination of 1,2-hexanediol, 1,2 octanediol and tropolone. Specific formulations are provided.
