For those of us who've ever peeled and picked off waterproof mascara, this gel-based invention from L'Oréal brings hope by "lashing out" against such waxy, shellacked residues.

According to this patent application, there is a market need for cosmetics that have staying power to make up the eyelashes, yet that also are easily removed. These inventors have discovered a particular architecture, in terms of Galenical formulation, that can satisfy this expectation.

The described composition includes: at least one aqueous phase gelled with at least one synthetic polymeric hydrophilic gelling agent; and at least one oily phase comprising a volatile oil and gelled with at least one lipophilic gelling agent.

These phases form a macroscopically homogeneous mixture comprising less than 10% w/w of nonvolatile oil(s), 10% to 70% w/w volatile oil(s), and water at 15% w/w or less.
