The researchers plan to measure actual DNA repair rates in the skin of human volunteers to confirm that morning sun is safest for humans. The research was funded by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

This research could possibly affect the way the industry recommends SPF protection, with a higher protection needed in the afternoon than in the morning. Also, the knowledge surrounding the repair protein may be useful for future sunscreen development.
