I last published the "Frequency of Use of Preservatives" survey in 1997. In it, I reviewed data supplied by manufacturers to the FDA's Voluntary Registration of Cosmetics Formulations program and reported on preservatives that are the most frequnetly used in cosmetics sold in teh United States in selected years. I had planned to update this survey every three years, but the FDA suspended the program for one year in 1998 for lack of funding. After the program was resumed in 1999, it made sense for me to wait a few years so companies could register their new formulations and, just as important, remove the old ones.
