California Extends Deadline for Safe Cosmetics Program

The state of California has extended the deadline for reporting cosmetic ingredients considered as hazardous or potentially hazardous. As part of the California Safe Cosmetics Act of 2005, the California Safe Cosmetics Program requires finished cosmetic manufacturers, packers and/or distributors named on cosmetic product labels to provide the California Department of Public Health with a list of all cosmetic products that contain any ingredients known or suspected to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

The initial deadline for reporting of Oct. 15, 2009, has been extended to Dec. 15, reportedly due to the large volume of data being submitted. The program urges companies that meet the reporting criteria to submit data as required by this extended deadline.

For more information regarding how to register for the program, read David C. Steinberg's latest Regulatory Review column, "Cosmetics Registration in California and the FDA's Electronic-only Drug Registration," which appeared in the October 2009 issue of Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine.
