TSA Aims to Lift Liquid Restrictions by 2010
Posted: January 12, 2009
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will lift restrictions on liquids, aerosols and gels on US airlines by 2010. Currently, passengers must have their liquids in three oz. or less bottles housed in a one quart-sized, clear plastic bag.
The reason for the security change, according to the TSA, is better x-ray technology. Currently, x-ray technology can identify the presence of liquids but cannot differentiate between threatening liquids and non-threatening liquids. However, advanced x-ray technology will be implemented that can examine the dimensions and density of liquids.
TSA is hoping to lift the size restrictions on carry-on personal care items by late 2009, although liquids will still be placed in a separate bin.
